Sprinkler Blowout Colorado Springs
Blowing out sprinklers is where a professional will attach an air compressor to the system and literally “blow out” the water from the lines, pipes and other parts.
A professional knows how much volume and pressure to use when blowing out sprinklers, as many do-it-yourself typically use an insufficient volume of air and after having forced some water out, the air will ride over the top of the remaining water. This results in the remaining water draining into low spots and subjecting the system to freeze damage.
Sprinkler pipes and backflow assemblies are at risk of freezing and breaking when temperatures drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Immediate damage can occur to exposed pipes and sprinkler apparatus with the first freeze of winter. Further damage can result as extended freezing temperatures and wind chill conditions cause the soil to freeze at the same depth as the underground pipes. In many cases, homeowners are not aware that their pipes have sustained damage until they begin watering in the spring and discover leaks in their yards!
A properly winterized sprinkler blowout can be the difference between an easy spring start up and weeks if not months of problems the following season.

QUESTIONS:
Q: Do I need to be home and what should I do to prepare to get my service done?
A: No, you do not need to be home at the time of service. If you are not home please:
Make sure a gate is unlocked and all dogs are put away. Make sure to shut off the water source to your sprinkler system prior to my arrival.
Q: If I am not there then how can I pay you.
A: You can leave a check or cash or call in with a credit/debit card.
Q: How often should I have my sprinklers blown-out?
A: You only need to have your sprinkler system winterized once a year. Make sure to winterize your system before the seasons first hard freeze. There after there is no guarantees or warranty that all the water can be flushed out of your system and you will not sustain costly damage. Just because you did not blow them out during the first hard freeze, get them blown out as soon as possible. The longer it freezes outside the farther down the freeze travels in the soil. If you do not blow them out you are virtually guaranteeing a disaster which will cost you alot of money to repair. In some cases the entire sprinkler system may have to be replaced.
Q: Do you offer a service to come and turn my system back on in the spring?
A: Yes, Spring Sprinkler System Start-up- $39.00 for 2 Zones and $10 for Each Additional Zone.

What Is Thatch?

Lawn Pros

Colorado Springs CO.

Thatch is composed of a tightly intermingled layer of stems, leaves and grass roots, which accumulates between the vegetation and the soil. Too much thatch increases the turf’s susceptibility to diseases, reduces its tolerance to drought, cold, and heat; and hinders the movement of air, water, fertilizers, and nutrients into the soil. In severe cases roots of the grass will not grow into the soil but actually take root in the thatch layer making the turf susceptible to drought and heat stress.Thatch will accumulate if the production of dead material exceeds the ability of the microorganisms to break down the material into elemental components. Thatch build-up increases during poor soil aeration and drainage, cold soils, the use of some pesticides, and the excessive use of fast release nitrogen fertilizers especially in a water-soluble form (Controlling Turf grass Pests). Using non-organic or fast release fertilizers inhibit microorganism activity, which helps decompose thatch. When a thatch layer is greater than 3/4 of an inch thick it may need to be physically removed. The best way to quickly repair a thatch problem is by power raking the lawn or physically removing the thatch layer. To prevent major damage power raking must be performed before the lawn greens up. When a severe thatch layer is discovered after the lawn has already greened-up than the thatch should be controlled through an increase of microbial activity and/or a reduction of the growth rate of the turf. The best methods of increasing microbial activity in the soil is by using only organic fertilizers, core aerating, and by adding a microorganism stimulant like Revive.

Thatch Preventative Practice

Mowing – Never cut more than 1/3 of the blade of grass at one time. Mulching does not increase the tendency to build thatch. Change the mowing height to 2.5 inches in the spring and fall and increase the height to 3 inches in the summer.

Fertilizing – Fast release nitrogen applications will result in a decrease in thatch decomposition and an increase in thatch production rates. Always avoid high dosages of synthetic nitrogen sources like ammonium nitrate and urea.

Irrigation – Avoid light and frequent watering. Always irrigate the turf deeply and infrequently. This entices the roots of the grass to grow deep into the soil instead of the thatch layer.

Pesticide – Pesticides negatively affect desirable microorganism and earthworm populations. Pesticides should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Power Raking is great a way to remove the dead debris and crust that builds up on a lawn over winter. It is also a gentle way to remove thatch from the lawn without causing the significant damage that dethatching can cause. We recommend power raking in the early spring before new growth has begun. Power raking slices the surface stolons and stimulates new growth, thickening the lawn.

Power Raking in Colorado Springs can be done in the spring or fall. If you are power raking to remove winter debris it is recommended to do it before the lawn starts growing to avoid setting the lawn back during the critical spring time growth. If power raking is being combined with over seeding we recommend doing it early spring to allow the new seedling plenty of time to get established before the summer drought and heat. Late summer/early fall remains the optimum time for any over seeding because you avoid the summer heat and drought and the new seedling do not have to compete with the spring germinating weeds.

Power raking is seen as an easier and more efficient option than dethatching. Because the blades only cut the surface of the grass, it aerates the lawn and helps get rid of dead matter without destroying the healthy grass. Dethatching is a much more extensive process that can tear apart growing grasses and needs to be followed by careful care of the lawn. Power raking targets only the dead grass layer and when done effectively, removes waste without causing damage so that the lawn can heal quickly and no permanent damage is done.

Proper Mowing Techniques.

Lawn Pros

Colorado Springs CO.

Proper mowing techniques can dramatically improve a lawn’s appearance and overall health. The recommended mowing height for Colorado’s grass types is 3.5 inches from March-April and the middle of September to October and 3.5 inches or higher from May-September. Often the highest setting on most mower types is 4 inches. Mowing the grass at 4 inches will prevent diseases, help the grass retain water and promote the roots to grow deeper. A lawn should be mowed frequently enough that no more than 33% of the foliage is removed at one time. Lawn mower blades should be sharpened once every five mows. Sharpen the blade at a 45-degree angle for the best results. An easily noticeable sign of a dull blade is when the tips of the grass are ripped turning them white. One final suggestion for properly mowing a lawn is to rotate the direction of the cut every mow. For instance, mow lengthwise one week, width wise the next, and diagonal the following. By following these instructions you will put less stress on your lawn, helping create the lush green lawn that you desire.

Should I Mulch or Bag My Grass Clippings?

The best looking lawns are not only well kept, they are also healthy. Lawn health care is a lot like human health care. Each case is somewhat unique and must be treated on an individual basis, taking the environmental conditions and the health of the lawn into consideration each time you mow.

Take a good look at the condition of the grass before you get the mower ready. This will give you time to decide whether you want to leave the clippings where they fall to provide nutrients or if you want to attach a bag to the mower and get a tidier look to the area.

Why Bag?

If you have neglected the chore of lawn mowing and have to cut back more than a third of the growth, it’s probably best to bag what you cut. Even if you have a mulching blade, you’ll probably get clumps of grass tossed around the yard. This is not only an unsightly outcome, but could lead to a buildup of thatch in certain areas that will give the lawn an uneven appearance.

If the mulcher doesn’t have enough power to cut and shred the height of the grass, the clumps will dry out and turn brown; making you wish you had used a bagger in the first place. The buildup could prevent nutrients from reaching the root system of your grass.

Benefits of Mulching

Mulching lawn mowers are intended to re-cut as you mow, leaving small bits of grass clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings can be made up of 5% nitrogen and 80% moisture, so leaving the cuttings behind is a good idea in times of drought or if the lawn needs a fertilizer, as long as the mulching isn’t adding a buildup of thatch. If your lawn mower is equipped with a mulcher that works efficiently, you won’t even see the clippings that you have left behind.

What’s Best?

Luckily, you can make the choice to mulch or bag each time that you cut the lawn.

  • In times of high heat or drought, mulch to help retain moisture in the soil to reduce the stress to the grasses planted.
  • If you have waited too long before mowing, or if an inspection of the lawn area shows a buildup of thatch, bag the clippings.

Key Takeaways:

Mulching is an environmentally friendly way to add natural fertilizer to the lawn, but if it’s not done correctly it could cause a buildup of thatch that will do more harm than good.

Seeding Versus Installing Sod

Installing sod and seeding lawns each have advantages and disadvantages. When deciding whether to sod or seed, you’ll need to consider cost and maintenance.

When starting a new lawn, as a homeowner, you may wonder, “do I seed or sod?” If cost is a factor, it is initially cheaper to seed; however, only if conditions are optimal. If not, costs can arise which make it just as expensive, or more expensive than sod. Below is a breakdown of information to consider when making the decision.

Costs and Materials

Some homeowners may need to pay for topsoil and roto-tilling for both sodding and seeding. You’ll need to measure the lawn to create your estimates.Sod is usually priced between$1.00 per sq. foot. Along with the sod, you’ll need a starter fertilizer, polymers, rototilling  and leveling the soil . Also, you may need a landscape rake, wheelbarrow, shovels, and stakes for installing sod on slopes.

Seed is priced between $0.10-$0.15 per sq. ft. However, you’ll also need to buy top soil to cover the seed as well as fertilizer and polymers is recommended.

Appearance

With sod, you have the satisfaction of an instant, lush lawn. You can walk on your lawn right away, and within two weeks, it should be rooted and secure. Different varieties grow well in different climates and terrain.

Seeded lawns take up to two years to mature and provide uniform cover. Seeding has a tendency to washout and most likely you will have to seed again to fill in spots where the grass seed didn’t germinate. As with sod, you’ll want to make sure you chose a combination of seed that grows well in your area.

Installation and Maintenance

If you plan to do it yourself, laying sod is physically harder work than seeding. You might choose to lay smaller rolls by hand. However, once the sod is down, maintenance is relatively easy. You’ll need to water the sod every day for two weeks, and then set a schedule pertinent to the weather in your area. Also, you might fertilize twice a year. Typically, sod is resistant to weeds because it roots quickly. However, if weeds do creep in, you may need to apply weed killer.

Seeding is physically easier than laying sod, but requires more maintenance. You’ll need to fertilize regularly and actively combat weeds because the grass is susceptible to weed invasion. Also, you’ll need to prevent people and animals from walking over the seed for at least the first six weeks.

The most important difference between seeding and sodding is the time necessary for developing a mature or durable turf. Sodding is essentially transplanting a mature turf that has been cared for by a professional. Seeding involves the same process used in the establishment of sod and can be accomplished by a professional or the homeowner. The number of variables involved in seeding make it difficult and many times unsuccessful for the homeowner.

What’s the difference between “pop up” lawn sprinkler heads and “rotor” heads?

Question: What’s the difference between “spray” lawn sprinkler heads and “rotor” heads?

Answer: Two common types of lawn sprinkler heads are “spray” heads and “rotor” heads.

Spray lawn sprinkler heads are sometimes designed to pop up out of the ground when the sprinkler system is activated, while others rest on pipes that remain aboveground at all times. Spray heads discharge a large volume of water in a relatively short amount of time, giving them, in irrigation lingo, a “high application rate.” For this reason, sprinkler systems with spray heads are most suitable for even surfaces, not slopes. If you do have to use a spray head on a slope, program your sprinkler system such that water is discharged over several shorter periods. This will help you avoid wasteful run-off.

By contrast, rotor lawn sprinkler heads have a lower application rate, so they’re simpler to use on slopes. Rotor heads also apply water more uniformly than do spray heads, making them more suitable for watering larger areas. For people who wish to irrigate large areas of lawn, sprinkler systems with rotor heads would be a logical choice.

Sprinkler System Check Up

The first thing to check is the water supply. Make sure nobody shut the water off. Another thing is that the outlet which your timer is plugged into can be on a GFI breaker. If you have power, then the problem could be out in the yard. Was there any work done on the house or in the yard recently? If so, somebody may have have damaged the wire to the system. Either way, it’s time to give us a call so we can come out and fix the problem. With proper maintenance and a watchful eye, sprinkler systems can save you a lot of time and money.

Adjusting the spray heads and/or rotors annually will give the best performance and return on your investment. For example: Now that that bush that you planted several years ago has grown into a stunning specimen maybe the grass on one side has started to look bad, is the bush in the way of the spray pattern? It may only need a simple adjustment to the nozzle to clear the bush, or it may need to be moved several feet.

Give your sprinkler system a little attention and you’ll have a beautiful, happy lawn.

Dog Urine and Lawn Care: What to Do About “Dog Spots”

Colorado Springs Lawn Care.

Is your landscaping going to the dogs? Is your lawn riddled with “dog spots?” There’s no reason that you can’t have both dogs and attractive landscaping. But landscaping with dogs does present challenges that may require some compromises. The goal in this balancing act is to achieve an attractive, dog-friendly yard.

Effective landscaping with dogs begins with the recognition that a business-as-usual approach won’t work. If your dogs are to be allowed to run about in your yard, you’ll probably have to make adjustments to your landscaping. Landscaping with dogs primarily entails making concessions to your canine friends, as you’ll see from the strategies below. I do, however, offer one glimmer of hope that you can, instead, adjust the dogs to the landscaping. Either way, if you fail to make some sort of adjustment, then dogs will make a mess of your yard. Worse still, they’ll be continually dragging dirt into your house.

Landscaping With Dogs: Adjustments to Your Landscaping

Strategy #1: Avoid Dog Spots With Hard-scape

Dogs and lawn grass don’t mix well. For small areas, consider switching from a grassy expanse to hardscape. The advantages of hardscape go beyond solutions to landscaping with dogs, since hardscape offers a low-maintenance alternative to grass that obviates lawn care. Stone and masonry are especially useful for landscaping with dogs, because they minimize the mess dogs make through urination (dog spots), digging and plain old wear and tear.

Here are some ideas for incorporating hardscape into your yard:

Strategy #2: Smarter Lawn Care — Know Your Grass Types

But what if you reject the idea of incorporating hardscape, sticking stubbornly to your wish for a “green carpet” of grass? At the very least, consider switching to a different type of grass. Some grasses hold up better to foot traffic (and paw traffic!) than others. Among the warm-season grasses, Bermuda grass is among the toughest. If you need a cool-season grass for landscaping with dogs, try Kentucky bluegrass.

Strategy #3: Green Alternatives to Grass

But installing a tougher type of grass will solve only one lawn-care problem encountered in landscaping with dogs: namely, wear and tear on grass. It will do nothing to solve the problem of “dog spots.” Dog spots are the unsightly yellow spots on grass caused by the nitrogen and salts in dog urine.

But there is a type of “green carpet” that solves the problem of dog spots: clover. Clover lawns have many advantages over grass lawns. If you’re landscaping with dogs, you’ll especially appreciate the fact that clover doesn’t stain the way grass does after being subjected to canine urine.

Strategy #4: Emergency Lawn Care — Diluting Dog Urine

If you can’t bring yourself to renounce grass, you can still prevent dog spots by vigilance. When you see a dog urinating on the grass, rush to the garden hose. Turn it on and bring it over to the area where your dog has just urinated. Douse the area with water, thereby flushing it and diluting the harmful elements in the dog urine.

This strategy won’t be very appealing if you “have a life.” I know I wouldn’t want my day to revolve around the urinary habits of my dog! But hey, different strokes for different folks.

Strategy #5: Fences for Dog-Friendly Yards

One way to keep dogs away from the delicate plants in your yard is by building fences around them. Wood picket fences are especially attractive. Plant some perennial flowers behind a white picket fence, and you’re well on your way to creating an English country garden.

Strategy #6: Wire Cages

Place wire cages around trees and shrubs to prevent dog urine from reaching their trunks and roots and damaging them. That way, dogs can go about their business and you can relax, secure in the knowledge that Fido’s urine won’t be killing your favorite specimen. Wire cages are fairly simple to build:

Buy a roll of chicken wire, tall enough that your dogs can’t jump over it.

  • Drive 4 stakes into the ground around the tree or shrub, about 2 feet away from any foliage or bark. Now measure the perimeter of the square area formed by the stakes.
  • Using that measurement, cut off a length of the wire.
  • Now run the length of wire from stake to stake, tying the wire to the stakes (e.g., with twist-ties).
  • The result is an enclosure that will keep Fido at bay.

Note, however, that this strategy represents a severe compromise for your landscaping. Use it only as a last resort. Chicken-wire is not especially attractive. But you could dress up such a wire cage by using decorative posts for your stakes.

Strategy #7: The Path of Least Resistance to Dog-Friendly Yards

If a fence surrounds your property, do not try to grow any plants in the area immediately adjacent to the fence. Dogs are territorial, and their favorite path in a fenced-in yard will be right along the fence. Unsightly “dog paths” are the result of this predictable behavior.

Rather than fighting it, plan your yard around your dog’s predictability. Install stone walkways over existing dog paths. Now everyone will be happy: the dog still has its path, and you get to have a better looking yard. Stone walkways exude charm and are a desirable addition to your landscaping regardless of dog problems.

Landscaping With Dogs: Adjustments to Your Dogs

Finally, consider a strategy that attacks the problem at the dogs’ end of it. The following strategy can help with the problem of “dog spots”:

Strategy #8: Dog Behavior Modification

Another option is to train your dogs so as to restrict their “toilet space” to a designated area. To facilitate clean-up, make sure that designated area has a surface of dirt or gravel.

Some have suggested that a change in a dog’s diet (for instance, mixing a bit of tomato juice into dog food) may neutralize the harmful elements in dog urine before it ever has a chance to harm your grass. As far as I know, however, the evidence that this strategy works is merely anecdotal.

A Final Consideration for Dog-Friendly Yards

If the plantings in your yard possess any significant degree of diversity, there’s a good chance that you’re growing poisonous plants — without even knowing it. You’d be surprised at how many of the most common landscape plants and native volunteers contain at least some parts (leaves, berries, etc.) that are toxic. Personally, this doesn’t worry me, as I rarely feel the temptation to nibble on my plants as I stroll through my yard. However, if you have dogs, cats, small children, or an uncontrollable appetite, it behooves you to learn more about poisonous plants.

How does a valve solenoid function?

How To Do Sprinkler Repairs Colorado Springs.

Step by step guide how a valve solenoid works:

  • When an electrical impulse is transmitted to the solenoid (black cylinder with wires), an electromagnetic field causes a small metal plunger in the solenoid to move upward.
  • When the plunger moves upward, a small hole (port) in the valve is uncovered. Water in the chamber above the closing mechanism (either diaphragm or piston) flows through the port and out of the valve, relieving water pressure needed to hold the valve closed.
  • At this point, the pressure of the incoming flow of water is now greater than the pressure in the chamber above the piston/diaphragm, and the force of the water pushing up underneath the piston/diaphragm opens the valve.
  • When the solenoid is DE-energized, the plunger moves down, closing the small port. Water flowing through a small hole in the closing mechanism refills the chamber above the piston/ diaphragm and builds up pressure. The increased pressure forces the piston/diaphragm downward, thus closing the valve.

Here are a few things to check in determining if your solenoid is bad

  • The solenoid should make a distinct “click” and hum or vibrate when activated. Try unscrewing the solenoid and swapping it with a nearby valve of the same model. Using the “Manual Start” on your timer, check the station again to see if the borrowed solenoid activates the valve.
  • Check for any visual hints that the solenoid has failed, such as rust? or that the wire connections are in waterproof connectors.
  • You can also have your solenoid tested with a multimeter. An electrical resistance test should typically indicate a reading between 20 and 60 ohms for a solenoid that is operating properly.
  • Check for a missing or broken solenoid O-ring.

How to adjust a valve solenoid?

  • Turn the solenoid (the black device with two wires coming out of it) to the left 1/4 turn. This will allow the valve to manually turn on.
  • To turn the valve off, turn the solenoid to the right until it is hand-tight

How to replace a solenoid?

1. Disconnect both wires connected to the solenoid.
2. Turn solenoid counter-clockwise until completely loose and free from valve.
3. Screw in new solenoid by turning clockwise. Do not over tighten. Only handtight.
4. Connect both wires to new solenoid using waterproof caps.

How to clear a clogged solenoid.

Sometimes the plunger inside the solenoid can become stuck in the upward position due to dirt in the solenoid. Check for dirt impeding the movement of the plunger. To do this:

  • Turn off the water and remove and disconnect wiring to the solenoid.
  • Unscrew the solenoid by turning it counter-clockwise.
  • Run water into the solenoid to dislodge dirt.
  • Push a piece of wire into the small hole in the retainer at the bottom of the solenoid to see if the plunger inside will move up and down freely.
  • If this does not resolve the issue, replace the solenoid.

Many valves have a device called a flow control. This looks like a faucet handle on the top of the valve, and acts very much the same way.

blowouts,winterization,Sprinkler repairs,Irrigation Repairs

By turning the flow control clockwise, you can tighten it and restrict the flow of water passing through the valve. If you turn it all the way down, you can turn the valve off completely.

By turning the flow control counter-clockwise, you can increase the flow and allow more water to pass through the valve. If you need to adjust the flow control, it is recommended that you turn it all the way down first. Then, with that station running, slowly open the flow until your heads are releasing the desired amount of water.

Solutions For Landscape Irrigation Problems.

Lawn Pros Colorado Springs Watering Solutions

No two landscapes are alike. That’s why Lawn Pros has the most diverse, durable and precise irrigation components in the industry.

Whatever landscape problems you might have, be worry-free knowing Lawn Pros has an efficient, hassle-free solution.

PROBLEM: Watering Slopes or Hills

Water can puddle or pool around sprinklers installed at the bottom of slopes or hills, causing soggy areas, which can kill grass or encourage fungus to grow.

LAWN PROS SOLUTION:

Use sprinklers with a Seal-A-Matic™ (SAM) Check Valve stop the problem of low head drainage and eliminate puddling. Or use Rotary Nozzles which deliver water at a lower rate, allowing sufficient soak-in time to prevent run-off.

PROBLEM: Different Plant Types

Shrubs, trees, flowers and grass all need different amounts of water. Delivering the same amount of water to every plant can cause the loss of plant life or you may simply be wasting water on plants that don’t need that much.

LAWN PROS SOLUTION:

Low-volume drip irrigation allows you to customize your water delivery to each plant’s individual watering needs. Designing a system with multiple independent zones allows you to schedule watering according to each area’s unique watering needs.

PROBLEM: Corners, Odd Shapes or Strips

Often it is hard to get complete and adequate coverage in these hard to reach areas, leaving some areas over-watered and others under-watered.

LAWN PROS SOLUTION:

Sprays installed with Variable Arc Nozzles (VAN) efficiently deliver precise, even coverage in any corner or odd-shaped area of the landscape.

PROBLEM: Watering Smaller Yards

Smaller areas can be difficult to water, often sprinklers end up watering sidewalks, driveways or spraying against the house or garage.

LAWN PROS SOLUTIONS:

Low-volume SQ Nozzles precisely water in a square pattern from 2.5 to 4 feet, which results in superior distribution control and uniformity to eliminate over-watering and wasteful run-off. Sprays installed with Variable Arc Nozzles (VAN) efficiently deliver precise, even coverage in smaller yards, any corner or odd-shaped area, or smaller strips of lawn.

PROBLEM: Variations in Exposure to the Sun

Over- or under-watering often results because not every part of your yard and garden requires the same amount of moisture due to exposure to the sun.

LAWN PROS SOLUTIONS:

Easy-to-set controllers with multiple, independent programs, like the ESP-Modular, allow additional watering times to be programmed for areas with more sun exposure. Low-volume drip allows the customization of precise water delivery to individual plants or groups of plants, based on specific watering needs and exposure to the sun.

PROBLEM: Sprinklers Turn On During Rainy Weather

Your system’s watering schedule starts when it is already raining.

LAWN PROS SOLUTION:

A Rain Sensor automatically monitors weather conditions and efficiently signals the controller to turn the system off when it rains, saving water and saving you money.

PROBLEM: Compacted Soil and Run-off

Certain areas of your lawn might have compacted soil, this condition can cause water to run-off onto sidewalks or driveways without giving it enough time to seep into the soil.

LAWN PROS SOLUTIONS:

Choose an easy-to-set controller with multiple programs and start times, or choose a controller with the Cycle + Soak option that allows the programming of multiple start times for shorter, precise periods of watering to eliminate run-off. Or use Rotary Nozzles which deliver water at a lower rate; this allows sufficient soak-in time to prevent run-off. Low-volume drip applies water at an even slower rate allowing the moisture to penetrate into the soil to prevent run-off.

PROBLEM: Water Pressure Issues

High or fluctuating water pressure can cause sprinklers to mist or fog, in this case water is not delivered to your lawn and garden at the optimal rate. A low water-pressure situation can also affect your sprinklers’ performance, leading to areas that do not get proper water coverage.

LAWN PROS SOLUTIONS:

High water pressure can be efficiently controlled at the valve using a  PRS Dial valve pressure regulator. At the point of distribution, excessive pressure can be controlled using  Spray Rotors with a Pressure Regulating Stem (PRS). For low-volume drip systems, install Inline or Anti-Siphon Drip Control Zone Kits with a pressure regulator.
